Functieomschrijving

For the Thermal Technology department we are looking for interns! The following internships / graduation assignments are available. Apply using the apply button and select the (graduation) internship you are interested in.

The internships on this page are:

1 Development Emissions Control System;

2 Development Infeeder;

3 Develop a system for Re-use of disposed water;

4 Development of a boiler Cleaning System;

5 Development of Proces Design Tools;

1 Development Emissions Control System

Suitable for BSc or MSc in Chemical Engineering / Mechanical Engineerging / Sustainable Energy

HoSt build wood and waste fired combine heat and power installations, with the goal to have maximal energy recovery from non-recyclable (bio)waste material, research on how to reduce the emissions is one of the topics. With a goal to have similar or even lower emissions than a gas fired boiler. The emission control system is an important part in it. Therefore HoSt is developing emission control systems. Your task will be by executing tests and measurements on-site and translate this to the development of an emission control system. The critical point is the fluctuation in fuel, influencing the combustion and therefore the emission.

Your tasks:

  • Familiarize yourself with the design of the combustion system of a biomass fired plant and study theoretical backgrounds;

  • Study the present performance of our own CHP-plant, data are available online;

  • Continue our program for co-firing non-woody fuels by executing tests on site in Bemmel (near Arnhem);

  • Analyze data and report results including operational background;

  • Advise optimal operating conditions for emission control.

2 Development Infeeder

Suitable for BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineerging

In the combustion plants of HoSt an in feeder is used to guide the fuel towards the furnace. HoSt will build much larger plants as before. The existing in feeder is not suitable for that. Therefore a new in feeding system must be developed. One of the goals is to reduce cost by simplification of the existing design where possible.

Your tasks:

  • Familiarize yourself with all components of a Biomass Plant; analysis of the present mechanical design

  • Study construction details of present infeeder design;

  • Looking to designs of other suppliers

  • Interview designers and users;

  • Making a basic design / concept

  • Make a complete design package including detailed drawings; design choices can be supported by FEA;

    Present and document improved design.

3 Develop a system for Re-use of disposed water

Suitable for BSc or MSc in Chemical Engineering / Sustainable Energy

A combine heat and power plant based on a steam cycle needs fresh water because at several places water is lost for example to sample and as steam from the deaerator. The water released from the plant has several qualities: water comes from flue gas condensers, sample water, etc.  Explore the losses of water and the water production amounts. Study possibilities to recover the water and the quality of the water from all the waste water streams develop a system to clean the water again (up to boiler feed water.

Your tasks:

  • Familiarize yourself with available solutions for water treatment for delivery of suppletion water to a power plant;

  • Study and evaluate costs, water consumption and quality limits for these solutions;

  • Study possible re-use of water treatment waste water streams in close cooperation with our HoSt Process Engineers;

  • Develop a tool for selection of the optimal water treatment method for specific applications;

  • Document the tool with a user manual and background information.

4 Development of a boiler Cleaning System

Suitable for BSc or MSc in Chemical Engineering / Mechanical Engineerging / Sustainable Energy

In the combustion plants of HoSt cleaning systems are applied to ensure good performance. In steam boilers high pressure steam is used for cleaning. For our hot water boilers a boiler cleaning system based on injection of compressed air is needed to remove local fouling from critical areas. The goal is to develop a cleaning system on air. The problem is that  a very large amount of air is needed in very short term. So the design should solve this problem

Your tasks:

  • Familiarize yourself with all components and main design method of a Biomass Plant;

  • Study the boiler cleaning systems based on steam and air applied in HoSt projects;

  • Develop a cleaning systems;

  • Discuss and asking offer with sub-suppliers for components for the designed cleaning system;

  • Evaluate possible designs with experienced HoSt engineers and operators;

  • Make a detailed design for 10, 15 and 20 Mwth boilers;

  • Present and document the design.

5 Development of Process Design Tools

Suitable for BSc or MSc in Chemical Engineering / Sustainable Energy

Internship assignment: Develop and validate design tools for Process engineering for systems in Biomass Plants including design rules and limitations.

Your tasks:

  • Familiarize yourself with the system design of a Biomass Plant;

  • Determine the scope of  the assignment (limited set of design tools);

  • Collect and evaluate design rules per equipment type or sub-system;

  • Advise a concept setup for Process Design Tool(s);

  • Build a first version as advised and evaluate the result with HoSt engineers.

  • Present and document the developed tools.
