Functieomschrijving

For the Thermal Technology department we are looking for interns! The following internships / graduation assignments are available. Apply using the apply button and select the (graduation) internship you are interested in.

The internships on this page are:

1 Effluent treatment for disposal from gasification;
2 Integration electrolyse with gasification;
3 Mechanical design of a gasification installation.

1 Effluent treatment for disposal from gasification

Suitable for MSc in Chemical Engineering

Gasification is a key technology for the development of advanced sustainable fuels and materials, such as Methanol, methane, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), plastics or Hydrogen. This technology will become increasingly important during the following years as the demand for sustainable synthetic fuels and materials will increase, in line with the needs for the sustainable energy transition. HoSt is building a demo plant to prove technology.

To produce a clean syngas from gasification is submitted to several steps of cleaning.  There are 2 steps of water washing. The first one containing dust, tars, chloride. Ther second step produces effluents with mainly ammonia and probably light tars. Both water that must be treated to be correctly disposed or reuse. The treatments can be flotation units, filters, solid adsorption, chemisorption or PH correction or combinations.

Your tasks:

  • Understand the boundary conditions of HoSt gasification solution;

  • Perform a literature study on the solutions required for each of the streams;

  • Calculate the expected amount of contaminants in each stream from the available tools from HoSt;

  • Investigate potential routes to clean the water, make mass balances;

  • Ask offers from suppliers for parts;

  • Provide useful design choices for the treatment of this effluents.

2 Integration electrolyse with gasification

Suitable for MSc in Chemical Engineering

Gasification is a key technology for the development of advanced sustainable fuels and materials, such as Methanol, methane, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), plastics or Hydrogen. This technology will become increasingly important during the following years as the demand for sustainable synthetic fuels and materials will increase, in line with the needs for the sustainable energy transition. HoSt is building a demo plant to prove technology.

The gasifier will be integrated with an second hand electrolyser (Solix oxide). The hydrogen will be injected in the methanisation, The oxygen could be used in the gasifier. The electrolyser needs steam.

The goal of the internship is to produce the documents for the integration of the electrolyser.

Your tasks:

  • Understand the boundary conditions of HoSt gasification solution

  • Study the electrolyser process with all components (P&ID’s, process prescription, manual)

  • Translating main documents from German to English

  • Specify what is need for the integration the electrolyser with the gasification and methanizatrion process

3 Development of a boiler Cleaning System

Suitable for HBO in Mechenical / Chemical Engineering

Gasification is a key technology for the development of advanced sustainable fuels and materials, such as Methanol, methane, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), plastics or Hydrogen. This technology will become increasingly important during the following years as the demand for sustainable synthetic fuels and materials will increase, in line with the needs for the sustainable energy transition. HoSt is building a 5 MWt demo plant to prove technology.

The engineering works are still in progress and require help in the mechanical design of the installation in accordance with ATEX, operability and local legislations. Parts like ash extraction system, piping like O2 piping, gas piping, steam/water piping, specifications of components.

Your tasks:

  • Understand the requirements of the project: P&IDs, component lists;

  • Collect all the necessary information on the components to be installed;

  • Draw in Solid works those components and place them in the 3D layout;

  • Write a report based on the design layout performed.
